Default can I use a regular radio with an epoch?

Maybe this is a stupid question. The Epoch has slowly pulled me back into R/C cars again and I'm working on other cars as well. 1/18 scale is great, like it a lot better than 1/10, but Epoch is still my fav. Anyway, can I use a regular radio with the epoch? I read that there are some compatibility issues and I never had problems with the stocker, just thought I'd ask. I just ordered a few parts from the store here and I thought while I had it apart I could swap crystals with my other radio if it will work.

Many 27MHz AM radios will work, but some will not.

Two that I like are the XP2 from a RC18T ready set and the Digital Iwaver. The IW01 and an old KT-3 also seem to work well but are nothing special.

The Futaba 2PL and the Prefex KT-5 do not work, or at least the ones I have tried don't.

On the higher end my old Airtronix M8 did not work with the 27MHz AM Mini-Z module but did with a 27MHz AM module I picked up at a swap meet.

See this thread for more specific Tx details:

I've got a KO Propo Mars radio, but the mini-z module doesn't work with the epoch. I've heard that the helios modules work in the mars (tho KO won't admit to it), so do you guys think the Helios mini-z module (different part number from the mars mini-z module) would work in my mars to run an epoch? I'll call my track owner and see if there is a way I could test it out.

I thought the digital iWaver TX was an FM radio? Can't use that with an Epoch, or am I wrong?
